Agency Compliance

This appendix contains important notices about the FaxPress Premier FCC and Telephone Company compliance, Ringer Equivalency Number, Industry Canada information, as well as safety warning messages and considerations.

FCC Part 15 Warning

The FaxPress Premier USA units generate, use, and can radiate radio frequency energy and, if not installed and used in accordance with this manual, may cause interference to radio communications. These models have been type tested and found to comply with the limits for a Class A computing device pursuant to Subpart J of Part 15 of FCC Rules, which are designed to provide reasonable protection against such interference when operated in a commercial environment. Operation of this equipment in a residential area is likely to cause interference in which case the user, at his own expense, will be required to take whatever measures may be required to correct the interference.

FCC Part 68 Information

The FaxPress Premier USA complies with Part 68 of the FCC Rules. An FCC Part 68 label is located on each of the FaxPress Premier modem boards. Castelle FaxPress products comply with Part 68 of the FCC Rules.

The FaxPress Premier contains an analog fax board. The Part 68 label on the analog fax board contains the FCC Registration Number (EBZUSA-34731-FB-E) and the Ringer Equivalence Number (0.77.)

The Ringer Equivalence Number (REN) is useful in determining the quantity of devices you may connect to your telephone line and still have all of those devices ring when your telephone number is called. In most, but not all areas, the sum of the RENs of all devices connected to one line should not exceed five (5.0). To be certain of the number of devices you may connect to your line, as determined by the REN, you should contact your local telephone company to determine the maximum REN for your calling area.

Connection of a FaxPress Premier USA unit to the telephone network should be made by using standard modular telephone jacks, type RJ11. The plug and/or jacks used must comply with FCC Part 68 rules.

Japan Telecommunication Compliance

The FaxPress Premier Japan models contains Intel Analog fax board(s) for Japan. The Intel Analog fax board for Japan complies with the Japanese telecommunication J.A.T.E. standard with the approval number A01-0936JP.

Rights of the Telephone Company

If this telephone equipment causes harm to the telephone network, the telephone company will notify you in advance that temporary discontinuance of service may be required. But if advance notice isn't practical, the telephone company will notify the customer as soon as possible. Also, you will be advised of your right to file a complaint with the FCC.

The telephone company may make changes in its facilities, equipment, operations or procedures that could affect the proper functioning of your equipment. If they do, you will be notified in advance in order for you to make necessary modifications to maintain uninterrupted service.

Electrical Safety Advisory

We recommend the installation of an AC surge arrestor in the AC outlet to which this equipment is connected. Telephone companies report that electrical surges, typically lighting transients, are very destructive to customer terminal equipment connected to AC power sources.

Any replacement of fuses should only be done by service personnel.

Proper AC source grounding, and grounding circuit continuity are vital for safe operation

Use only the 3-wire, 3-terminal power cord provided for the FaxPress Premier units.

To preclude the possibility of electrical shock, do not ever remove the FaxPress Premier chassis.

Safety Warning Messages

To prevent damage to the FaxPress Premier system board, it must be handled with care. The following measures are generally sufficient to protect your equipment from static electricity discharge:

When handling the system board, use a grounded wrist strap designed for static discharge elimination and touch a grounded metal object before removing the board from the antistatic bag. Handle the board by its edges only; do not touch its components, peripheral chips, memory modules or gold contacts.
When handling processor chips or memory modules, avoid touching their pins or golden edge fingers. Put the value communications appliance system board and peripherals back into the antistatic bag when not in use or not installed in the chassis.

Some circuitry on the system board can continue operating even though the power is switched off. Under no circumstances should the Lithium coin cell used to power the real-time clock be allowed to be shorted. The coin cell can heat under these conditions and present a burn hazard.

This guide is for technically qualified personnel who have experience installing and configuring system boards. Disconnect the system board power supply from its power source before you connect/disconnect cables or install/remove any system board components. Failure to do this can result in personnel injury or equipment damage.

Avoid short-circuiting the lithium battery; this can cause it to superheat and cause burns if touched.

Do not operate the processor without a thermal solution. Damage to the processor can occur in seconds.

Rack Mounting Safety Considerations

When rack mounting a FaxPress Premier unit, consider the following:

Elevated Operating Ambient - If installed in a closed or multi-unit rack assembly, the operating ambient temperature of the rack environment may be greater than room ambient. Therefore, consideration should be given to installing the equipment in an environment compatible with the maximum rack ambient temperature of 50 degrees Celsius.
Reduced Air Flow - Installation of the equipment in a rack should be such that the amount of air flow required for safe operation of the equipment is not compromised.
Mechanical Loading - Mounting of the equipment in the rack should be such that a hazardous condition is not achieved due to uneven mechanical loading. Mounting the equipment with a tray is highly recommended.
Circuit Overloading - Consideration should be given to the connection of the equipment to the supply circuit and the effect that overloading of the circuits might have on overcurrent protection and supply wiring. Appropriate consideration of equipment nameplate ratings should be used when addressing this concern.
Reliable Earthing - Reliable earthing of rack-mounted equipment should be maintained. Particular attention should be given to supply connections other than direct connections to the branch circuit (e.g. use of power strips).

Important Information for Canadian Customers

The FaxPress Premier USA complies with the Industry Canada rules. An Industry Canada label is located on the analog fax board of the FaxPress Premier unit, and the T1 board of the FaxPress Premier unit. The label on the analog fax board displays the Industry Canada Registration Number IC:885 10497 A. The label on the T1 board displays the Industry Canada Registration Number IC:885 7969 A.

The Canadian “Industry Canada” label identifies certified equipment. This certification means that the board meets certain telecommunications network protective, operational and safety requirements. Industry Canada does not guarantee the equipment will operate to the user's satisfaction.

Before installing this equipment, make sure you are permitted to connect to the facilities of the local telecommunications company. You must install the equipment using an acceptable method of connection. In some cases, you may also extend the company's inside wiring for single line individual service by means of a certified connector assembly (telephone extension cord). You should be aware, however, that compliance with the above conditions may not prevent degradation of service in some situations.

Repairs to certified equipment should be made by an authorized Canadian maintenance facility designated by the supplier. Any repairs or alterations made by the user to this equipment, or equipment malfunctions, may give the telecommunications company cause to request the user to disconnect the equipment.

Users should make sure for their own protection that the electrical ground connections of the power utility, telephone lines and internal metallic water pipe system, if present, are connected together. This precaution may be particularly important in rural areas.

Users should not attempt to make such connections themselves, but should contact the appropriate electric inspection authority, or electrician, as appropriate.

Load Number

The Load Number (LN) assigned to each terminal device denotes the percentage of the total load to be connected to a telephone loop which is used by the device to prevent overloading. The termination on a loop may consist of any combination of devices subject only to the requirement that the total of the Load Numbers of all the devices does not exceed 100.

Fax Branding

The Telephone Consumer Protection Act of 1991 makes it unlawful for any person to use a computer or other electronic device to send any message via a telephone fax machine unless such message clearly contains in a margin at the top or bottom of each transmitted page or on the first page of the transmission, the date and time it is sent and an identification of the business or other entity, or individual sending the message and the telephone number of the sending machine or such business, or entity, or individual.

In order to program this information into your fax machine, please refer to Personal and Corporate Cover Pages or Advanced Functions for instructions on including date and time and identification parameters.
