GroupWise and the Email Gateway for Generic SMTP
The Email Gateway for Generic SMTP supports the Internet’s open standards for message transmission and formatting: TCP/IP, SMTP and RFC-822/MIME. Novell’s GroupWise, however, is a LAN-based messaging system with its own proprietary mail protocol, and so requires an agent to translate messages from the GroupWise messaging format to the TCP/IP and SMTP protocols the Email Gateway for Generic SMTP uses.
Novell offers two Internet messaging solutions that allow GroupWise to communicate with the Email Gateway for Generic SMTP:
■ | GroupWise Internet Agent (GWIA) |
■ | GroupWise SMTP/MIME Gateway. |
Both solutions support TCP/IP and SMTP, and will convert GroupWise mail protocol to SMTP protocol and SMTP protocol to GroupWise mail protocol, allowing the Email Gateway for Generic SMTP and the GroupWise mail server to send messages back and forth.
The GroupWise Internet Agent does not require a smart host, can perform IP address resolution directly with a Domain Name System, and is MX record aware.
If you are not using a DNS, however, your email server must have a host file for lookup. This file will contain the TCP/IP addresses associated with the host names of servers or workstations external to the GroupWise system but in communication with GroupWise users. The Email Gateway for Generic SMTP is such an external device.
GWIA is shipped with GroupWise versions 5.x and above. Groupwise SMTP/MIME Gateway can be obtained through Novell resellers. Refer to your GWIA or Groupwise SMTP/MIME Gateway for instructions on installation and use.
The Novell network may either be configured to connect to the Internet or as an independent LAN. In either case, using the Email Gateway for Generic SMTP with GroupWise requires you to set up the GroupWise mail server to support SMTP and TCP/IP protocols.
This document covers the Novell network preparation and GroupWise mail server configuration.
Take these steps to prepare the Novell environment:
■ | Install a FaxPress server on the Novell network. Make sure it can send, receive, and print faxes. See the FaxPress Administrator’s Guide for information. |
■ | Confirm either the GroupWise Internet Agent or the Groupwise SMTP/MIME Gateway is installed on your GroupWise mail server. |
If your GroupWise mail server uses a domain name (DNS) server, record both the GroupWise mail server’s IP address and the FaxPress IP address in the resolv.cfg file on the GroupWise mail server. (See Editing the Resolv.cfg File.) Editing the Resolv.cfg File
Record the’s IP address and associate it with the subdomain name of the Email Gateway for Generic SMTP in the host file your GroupWise mail server uses to look up servers external to the GroupWise email environment. (See Editing the Hosts File SMTP-Compliant Environments.)
Setting Up he GroupWise Mail Server
Follow these steps to configure your GroupWise mail server for use with the Email Gateway for Generic SMTP:
1. | Edit the hosts file in sys: etc\hosts. |
2. | Edit the resolv.cfg file in sys: etc\resolv.cfg. |
3. | Edit the route.cfg in wpgate\gwia\route.cfg. |
The following sections cover these tasks.
The hosts file must include:
■ | the Email Gateway for Generic SMTP workstation’s name and IP address |
■ | an alias entry for the Email Gateway for Generic SMTP (i.e., fax.yourcompany.com) |
Here is an example of a GroupWise mail server’s host file edited for use with the Email Gateway for Generic SMTP:
# SYS: ETC\HOSTS
# Mappings of host names and host aliases to IP address.
127.0.0.1 loopback lb localhost # normal loopback address
192.16.50.5 fax.castelle.com
(this is the IP address and domain name of the workstation running the Email Gateway for Generic SMTP service.)
# examples from Novell network

# Interesting addresses on the Internet
192.67.67.20 sri-nic.arpa nic.ddn.mil nic 26.2.0.74 wsmr-simtel20.army.mil simtel20 192.16.50.2 NETWARE5
192.16.50.5 SMTP
(this is the IP address and name of the workstation running the Email Gateway for Generic SMTP)
The resolv.cfg file must include:
■ | the Email Gateway for Generic SMTP workstation’s name and IP address |
■ | an alias name for the Email Gateway for Generic SMTP (i.e., fax.yourcompany.com) |
Here is an example of a GroupWise mail server’s resolv.cfg file edited for use with the Email Gateway for Generic SMTP:
fax.castelle.com
(alias name)
SMTP 192.16.50.3
(Email Gateway for Generic SMTP computer name and IP address)
Editing the Route.cfg File
The route.cfg file requires an alias entry for the Email Gateway for Generic SMTP (i.e., fax.yourcompany.com)
To edit the route.cfg file, find or create a notepad file in the \wpgate\gwia
directory called route.cfg. In the file enter the alias name, then a space, then the Email Gateway for Generic SMTP’s IP address. Use a set of square brackets [ ] around the IP address to prevent the GWIA mail server from doing a DNS query and sending all mail messages to the Email Gateway for Generic SMTP.
Here is an example of the edited route.cfg file:
fax.castelle.com [192.16.50.5
]
(This is the alias name and IP address of the workstation running the SMTP Gateway service.)
Be sure to reboot your GroupWise server after editing the host file and the resolv.cfg and creating the route.cfg file.
